Wood Fence Installation

Cedar and redwood privacy fencing built for San Diego's dry heat and coastal air. Apache builds good neighbor fence, board-on-board, cap-and-trim, and horizontal styles, with posts set in concrete and framing sized for the run. Wood is the warmest looking option and the most flexible on sloped East County lots, and it can be stained or painted right after installation to lock the color in before the sun reaches it.

Questions

About wood fence installation

How long does a wood fence last in San Diego?

A properly built wood fence with posts set in concrete can last a long time here, but the deciding factor is whether it is sealed. Unprotected wood exposed to San Diego UV, winter rain, and salt air typically greys, checks, and begins cupping within a few seasons. Stained or painted, the same fence holds its appearance and structure far longer.

What is a good neighbor fence?

A good neighbor fence alternates the boards from one side of the rails to the other, so both properties see a similar face instead of one side getting the finished look and the other getting rails and posts. It is a common choice on shared property lines.

Cedar or redwood — which should I pick?

Both resist decay naturally and both perform well locally. The practical decision usually comes down to appearance, board availability, and budget at the time of the build. We will tell you what we are seeing in the supply yard when we quote.

Should the fence be stained before or after installation?

After it is standing and the wood is dry enough to accept finish, but as soon as practical after that. New lumber is at its most absorbent and has not yet taken UV damage, so that window gives the best penetration and protection. We coordinate this with Tom Sawyer Fence Painting.

Seal it while the wood is still new

Wood only lasts in San Diego if it is protected from UV, winter rain, and salt air. Tom Sawyer Fence Painting (CSLB 1038505, since 2002) handles staining and painting for our new installs, with a both-sides discount when the neighbor joins.
